406th/858th BSs
Karr Crew

Arriving at Harrington on 2 June 1944 as a replacement crew for the 406th BS, they were a ten-man crew quickly reduced to eight but we know not who the orphans were due to the very bad condition of the microfilm for that day. They probably went through the same Operational Training Unit (OTU) experiences as did the 850th BS. The markers on the copilots jacket imply that the picture was probably sometime after 9Sep44.

They flew their first mission as a crew on the night of 16/17 July '44 to the PERCY 17G Drop Zone. It was a success, 7 packages and 12 containers, distributing 10 bundles of (40,000 leaflets) nickels on the return trip.
By the end of September 1944 they had accumulated 20 combat missions, still not enough to return to the Z.I. A stub crew, minus the TG and Dispatcher, flew seven gas haul missions at the end of September 1944.

Errata: Though Karr contended for many years that he piloted the plane for the Carpetbagger "signature" plane on the monument at Harrington, but this was disproved when Henry Gilpin acquired a copy of the Operations Log.
