788th/859th BSs
Mulligan Crew

Picture taken at Harrington on a day that must have been very bright, the Mulligan crew showed up at 179 probably toward the end of June 1944, flying their first three combat missions in late July. Though they had in 20 missions by the stand-down in September of that year, it was not enough to save them from going to Italy on Detached Service with the 885th BS out of Brindisi. Fred P. Sage, who later became a renowned surgeon, was the brother of Al Sage, who at the time was flying with Balchen's "Ball Project" out of Leuchars, Scotland. The crew was shortened for the six gas-haul missions in the Late Period Log.
