On the night of 28/29 May 1944, they encountered a German ME-110 on a mission to Belgium and were shot down near Ninove, Belgium, west of Brussels. Hawkins was killed by gunfire before the plane crashed, his body was found some eighty yds from the wreck, his parachute unopened. Wolcott, Auda, Ryckman, Cozzens, Tuttle, Loucks, Deihl, and Carmen J. Vozzella, a 788th BS Navigator flying an orientation mission, all evaded or escaped from capture and returned to duty by the Autumn of 1944.

Errata: Hawkins' Honor Roll card lists him as "Died Of Wounds DOW". Note the packs that the tailgunner is wearing, it was often the coldest position and use of the "bunny suit" was necessary to prevent frostbite.
